This article is about Obscurity Laboratory 01. For its successor, see Obscurity Laboratory 02.
Obscurity Laboratory 01 was an experimental project started by the Conspicuous Interaction Agency. It was located in an unknown forest in Canada. Its purpose was to isolate its test subjects from the outside world and to fend for themselves. Think about it like a kind of prison.
Here's its test subject list:
However, Obscurity Laboratory 01 wasn't without its flaws. For one, test subjects could still use computers to interact with the Internet, even though the computers in particular weren't up to date — originating all the way back to the 2000s.
In addition to this, several of the test subjects trapped within Obscurity Laboratory 01's walls almost escaped. Due to there being low security — which is not ideal for a project like this, considering its goal was isolation — it saw three of the initial ten subjects escape. The only reason why these subjects failed to get far enough from the building was due to the dangerous environment surrounding Obscurity Laboratory 01. The forest surrounding the laboratory was frequently attacked by missiles and unidentifiable entities.
The last and most problematic issue Obscurity Laboratory 01 had was that its supplies were extremely vulnerable to unidentifiable entities. Often times, these entities break into the food or water supply and consume a large portion of it, resulting in insufficient attempts of satisfying both the staffs's and the test subjects's needs. While this in particular wouldn't be a huge problem because the food and water supply can be easily restored by staff from suppliers that come from the nearby city of [REDACTED], some entities would exploit the vulnerability beyond taking much of the supplies for their greedy selves. Among this small group, one of them is the Malice Puddle.
The Malice Puddle was a black puddle that merely stepping in can cause sickness. While most of the time it is not active, it becomes highly dangerous when it does. It can move at a speed that is roughly equivalent to a human's running speed. While active, it chases down nearby entities in an attempt to consume them to accumulate more mass to eventually split in two or three.
One instance of the Malice Puddle was found in the tank that usually contains the water supply. Test Subject 02 was examining the status of the water tank when she noticed that there was a black puddle in the tank. She tip-toed in fear with one thing in mind: "I have to tell the staff." Then, she heard a noise.
The Malice Puddle started chasing after her, and in response, decided to flee. The chase kept for about a minute until she ran into a dead end with the puddle just behind her. It leapt and drowned her in its goop. But then, something unexpected happened.
Instead of Test Subject 02's body dissolving in the Malice Puddle, it ended up transforming her body and gained control over it. The transformed body slowly rose up from the now flattened puddle, and opened her eyes.
"I am Malice Manifestation," she muttered.
Although she wasn't the one who said it herself. The puddle ended up getting into Test Subject 02's brain, ultimately possessing her. This yielded the result of my birth.
This was a photo from the incident:
The aftermath resulted in an evacuation of all surviving test subjects and staff and the closure of Obscurity Laboratory 01. A year later, the Conspicuous Interaction Agency built a new laboratory to continue this test, this time with the vulnerabilities patched upon inspection of the closed laboratory.
